A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to receive my very first wonky fruit & veg box from the wonderful Oddbox. When Deepak and Emilie discovered that 'ugly' produce was just as delicious and nutritious for us as the ones we are used to eating, they did some research and discovered a shocking 20-40% of produce in the UK goes to waste before it even leaves the farm because it does not conform with our supermarkets cosmetic rules. Just because the aubergine has a bump, the passion fruit has a dent or the apples look like pears they are ending up in the bin.
With 25% of the world's fresh water supply being used to produce food that is never eaten, 'food miles' contributing to carbon emissions and 1 in 9 people still going to bed hungry every night, using companies like Oddbox who are preventing waste and using local produce is one way you can start helping our planet.
In my amazing medium fruit & veg home box I was so lucky to be sent (Retail price of £13.75) was everything from rocket, passion fruit, spring onions, potatoes, oranges, etc. With the help of my fantastic friend Emily from Saving the Grace, we were able to cook the most delicious Indian/English fusion plant based lunch of potato & carrot rostis, rocket hummus and a turmeric cauliflower, kale & tomato salad followed by a apple, passionfruit and blackberry crumble!
